A Look Back at College Football Opening Weekend - Plus Some MLB

Fortunately, the opening weekend of college football has come to an end. The Locks is always torn going into the opening weekend of either the CFL or NFL season. First, we're overcome with excitement by the prospect of once again gambling on football. On the other hand, we're reluctant to put money down before seeing any of these teams perform at least once. We once again come away from opening weekend thinking it should be used as a research tool as opposed to fertile ground for making money. Yet, we're gamblers at heart, so we'll always have the action rolling on opening weekend. So what did we learn this weekend:

Florida and Texas deserve to be 1 and 2 in the country but we didn't learn anything about them from their week 1 blowouts of two cupcakes

Cal and Oklahoma State are very, very good football teams

Miami is much further along in rebuilding a powerhouse than we thought

East Coast to West Coast trips never work out well for the traveling team (ask Maryland, as well as those who thought LSU would cover at Washington)

Greg Paulus may be an enormous upgrade at QB for the Cuse in terms of game management but his arm is one of the worst we've seen at a major D-1 school in a long time

USC is going to be fine with a freshman QB

Rutgers still deserves the name: "The Scarlet Ladies"

It will be a very frustrating year in Blacksburg unless VT can get some sort of production from its offense

Alabama has the best defense in the country, and it isn't very close

We need to see Notre Dame beat a real team before we anoint them as being back, though that was a nice start vs. Nevada

Ohio State does not look prepared for next week's visit from USC

Poor, poor Sam Bradford. That injury sucks much more for him personally then it does for the Oklahoma team

We're looking forward to week 2.

Unpickable Master Locks - MLB:

Detroit @ Kansas City - What a day for baseball fans. We didn't think we'd get another opportunity to bet against a team starting Bruce Chen in 2009. Lo and behold, Chen takes the hill tonight against the Tigers. Rick Porcello faces Chen and that doesn't seem fair. The Tigers like to beat up on lefties and are looking to gain momentum heading into the playoffs. Look to Miggy Cabrera and Placido Polanco to do most the damage against Chen and Porcello to pitch deep into the game. We love Detroit here. Take the Tigers (-165) to win 6-3. LOCK IT UP

St. Louis @ Milwaukee - Ride the Cards. Ride them all the way to the bank. Smoltz nearly pitched an excellent game against the Eww Crew five days ago. We think he learned enough to turn that excellent game in tonight. He'll need to do so since Manny Parra has been rather successful against St. Louis this year. However, he should regress back to his mean as a starter against this team. He'll slip enough to give this game to the Cards. Take St. Louis (-131) to win 5-3. LOCK IT UP

Texas @ Cleveland - Game 1 - This is a make up of yesterday's postponed game. We broke it down in yesterday's post and nothing has changed from our perspective. Take the Rangers (-131) to win 7-5. LOCK IT UP

Remaining Games to Consider:

Yankees (-150)
Marlins (-110)
Mariners (EVEN)
Padres +1.5 runs (EVEN)
